How to create a dropdown question

This article shows you how to build a basic dropdown question.

Step 1: Navigate to the question bank and select new question.

Step 2:  Select New Question and enter the Question Title and select Create Question.

Step 3: Dropdown question types are embedded within the Fill-in-the-blank question type. Within the question builder create a fill-in-blank-question.

Step 4: Insert your question stem and add the dropdown.

Start by writing your question stem. Unlike other question types, the question stem must be written within the Statement box. In this example, we have written the question stem "Which of the following is a state capital in the United States".

Step 5: Add the location of the dropdown box and add the fill-in-the blank.

To add blanks, simply highlight the text (or number) you want to change to fill-in-the blank and click the Insert Blank Space button. By default, the highlighted characters are marked as the acceptable answer for the auto-grader. You'll see in the next step how you can change this.

Step 6: Configure Your Settings For Text Answer

To configure your settings, first click on the fill-in-the blank box and click the settings or cog button .

From the dropdown box, select dropdown.

Step 7: Add acceptable answers and distractors

The auto-grader allows you to specify multiple acceptable answers. The system will randomly present only one correct answer to the student. All distractors will be presented to the student.

After entering the the acceptable answers and distractors, select Update.

Step 8: Review and Preview Questions

After you have finished creating your question you can preview what the question looks like by scrolling to the top of the page and selecting "Review". Here, you will see a preview of your question with the correct answer choice pre-populated.

Select the dropdown to see and review the answer choices.
