This article shows you how to create an assignment in Canvas that's backed by EXAMIND LTI.
Link Canvas Assignment To EXAMIND Assessment
Create a new assignment in Canvas. Give it an Assignment name, then set the number of Points:
Set Submission Type to External Tool, then click Find:
Select the EXAMIND LTI Tool:
If this is the first time you're setting up and EXAMIND assignment for this Canvas course, you will be asked to create a matching course in EXAMIND. Check that the information is correct before proceeding. Pay particular attention to start date and end date, as they should match the start and end dates in Canvas.
Check Load This Tool In A New Tab and leave Allowed Attempts as Unlimited even if you don't intend to allow more than one attempt. The allowed attempt will be controlled in EXAMIND's UI later. Optionally assign Due date. If you leave Due date blank for now, be sure to set it later. Leave Available from and Until blank for now. We will come back to it later.
Note: it's important to select the Load This Tool In A New Tab option to prevent 3rd party cookie issues for students. If this option is not selected, students using browsers that have 3rd party cookies disabled will not be able to load the assignment.
Save the assignment.
Save the assignment.
Load the assignment in a new window:
The assessment title as shown in the EXAMIND UI will initially be a generic LTI Assessment, but it will update automatically (see below) every 24 hours or so.
Configure Extensions and Availabilities
Student extensions need to be configured in both Canvas and EXAMIND. Let's first start with EXAMIND.
Click Edit:
Click Edit:
Click Back to Assessments
Then go to the Roster page to add course-wide extensions for students:
Then go to Assessments, click the assessment title, then add any assessment specific availability windows and extensions:
Now that availability windows and extensions are in EXAMIND, they need to match in Canvas. Return to the assignment in Canvas and assign matching due dates:
The Available from and Until can be left blank in Canvas, which means students will be able to see and open this assignment throughout the duration of the course. That's not a problem, as EXAMIND will prevent the student from starting the Assessment until it's available in EXAMIND. For more control over when students can open the assignment, set Available from and Until in Canvas.
Troubleshooting Tips
- If the newly created assignment doesn't appear for your students, try adding the assignment to a Module in Canvas
